Edison J. Demler

Edison J. Demler, a Long Beach resident for 75 years, passed away on April 15, 2008 in Fallbrook, California. Ed was born on November 23, 1916 to Ernest and Emmy Demler in Fairbury, Illinois. His family moved briefly to Cheyenne, Wyoming and then to Long Beach in 1920, where he graduated from Poly High School and Long Beach City College. He received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of California and his law degree from Boalt Hall. He proudly served his country during World War II as a Lieutenant (jg) in the Navy, stationed in the Philippines. Upon his return to Long Beach, he began a highly successful law practice which included partnerships with Warren Eckert and David Eagleson, who later became a Justice of the California Supreme Court.

He was the founder and senior partner of Demler, Armstrong & Rowland.

He was considered one of the preeminent trial lawyers in California and was named “Trial Lawyer of the Year” in 1986 by Verdictum Juris.

Ed Demler believed very passionately that the practice of law was a noble profession and that attorneys should develop their skills not only as advocates but as diplomates, negotiators and counselors. He was well known for his impeccable manners, professionalism and dedication and was well-respected by both bench and bar.

Mr. Demler was also active in community affairs and was the President of the Long Beach Bar Association in 1960. He was also a founder and Chairman of the Board of the National Bank of Long Beach and a long time member of the Virginia Country Club from 1948 to 2005.

Edison Demler was predeceased by his daughter Julie, wife Marjorie, second wife Elizabeth and brothers Ernest, Edmond and Eugene. He is survived by his daughters, Bonnie Watkins of Fallbrook and Rae Burchfiel of Rochester, New York, and his brother Everett, also a long time trial attorney in Long Beach. Military services will be held in San Diego.
